QUESTIONS ANSWERED...

How can I be a better singer?

Answer...

Well, it depends a lot on what you mean by “better”. Think about it, as there are many kinds, schools, traditions, cultures in which the activity called “singing” is immensely varied. What links all forms of singing though, is the basic activity of interplay between vowels, notes, timbres and textures, and their repetitions. Note the presence of the “vo” syllable in the word “vowel”. This is because we cannot sing without most of the vocal activity being presented in the form of vowels.

If you think about it - or better still - listen closely to your own voice singing, and those of others and hear that for yourself - how can you sing with only consonants? Again, the word itself gives the reason - it literally means “with/soundings”. Strictly speaking, consonants cannot be made on the held vibration of a “note” - they need notes = vowels in order to do what they do - they “sound with”.

What consonants are great at is rhythm. They are a form of percussion, which in the interchange with vowel sounds on notes (including rapid sequences of notes, or even of noteless journeys up or down, (known as glissandos - meaning literally slides) offer a whole orchestra - almost!

So in answer to your question, in my view the best way to get better as a singer, is to become as fully aware and capable of producing, a wide range of both vowel and consonant sounds. Sound is the basic material of singing, which is why I am often seeking to make those asking about singing, aware of this basic fact. And in order to find your own true voice - singing or speaking - the first work is to get to know the world, or even universe of sound/s that is the raw material of your voice, and of singing with it.

Why do I need to clear my voice before singing?

Answer...

The main reason to clear the voice is to remove excess saliva and phlegm from the epiglottis and vocal apparatus. If you do not have this buildup, there is no need to clear your voice. Most of us, however, react to some particulate, humidity, or other foreign (to us) presence in the air. The body reacts to this by secreting saliva and mucous to protect tissue that could be injured by these factors. A short, minimal burst of air through the vocal cords typically unseats enough of this moisture so that bubbles aren’t formed on the edges of the vocal cords themselves, producing altered vocal tone and clarity.

Most vocal pedagogues and speech pathologists seem to agree that soft clearing is pretty harmless, but drinking water is preferred. Harsh clearing or coughing is not good; don’t do it. (If you’re sick and are coughing as a matter of course, you probably shouldn’t be singing.)

If you’re night contending with any of these issues, you don’t need to clear your voice. Just sing!
